Unfortunately, panties and skid marks go hand in hand sometimes.

It’s the nature of that part of our bodies. But you don’t need to toss your favorite panties out because of it.

Several items you already have in your home can help you remove skid marks from panties.

In this article, we’re discussing techniques for removing skid marks from your underwear.

We’ll also talk about how you can prevent stains in panties, the cause of skid marks in underwear, and if their presence should be cause for concern.

Keep reading for help with managing this rarely talked about occurrence.

The Cause of Skid Marks in Underwear

Generally, panties skid marks are caused by improper wiping practices.

When you go to the bathroom, fecal matter is left behind in the inner lining of your anus. That’s typically what causes skid marks in your underwear.

Another possibility is you may not have finished your bowel movement.

If something was still inside, it could inadvertently come out after the fact and leave stains in your panties.

Also, bowel movements aren’t all of the same consistency. Some are messier than others because there is more moisture in them.

Looser stools tend to leave skid marks more often because they can leak out after.

Are Skid Marks Normal?

We wouldn’t say skid marks are normal, but they’re not uncommon. Many people experience them from time to time.

If you find you have skid marks frequently and there is a substantial amount of staining and fecal matter in your underwear, there may be a deeper issue.

You should talk to your doctor about what’s been happening to see if something’s going on with your body that needs addressing.

Should I Feel Ashamed?

Here’s the thing. Panties skid marks likely happen to everyone you know every once in a while. It’s not something people talk about.

Obviously, none of us wants to tell someone else we have skid marks in our underwear. Or worse yet, you don’t want to ask someone, “do I smell like poop?” But you also shouldn’t feel ashamed if you experience this.

All you need to do is figure out what’s causing the issue and address it.

How to Remove Skid Marks from Panties

You may have some underwear you don’t mind just throwing away when they’re soiled or stained.

That’s ok. But you don’t want to trash every pair of underwear that gets marked up.

What if it happens to your favorite pair?

You have many options for removing panties’ skid marks.

Wash in Cold Water

The most important piece to this method is to use cold water.

Do not use warm or hot water. Stains that aren’t pre-treated with cold water or some sort of solution will bind to the fabric more if you use warm water.

It’s best to start by allowing the panties to soak in cold water first.

A period of about 10 minutes should do the trick. Then rinse them with clean water before putting them in the washing machine or hand washing them.

Hand washing will likely give you the best results.

Use a Little Baking Soda

Some skid marks are worse than others.

If you have a difficult stain to get out, it might require more effort and something to help pull the marks away from the fabric.

Baking soda is something most of us have in our homes that can help you remove skid marks from your underwear.

After you’ve soaked the panties in cold water and rinsed away any debris, sprinkle some baking soda directly on the stain.

Use a soft brush to work the stain out of the fabric. Use gentle strokes and circular motions. A new toothbrush makes a good option for this method.

White Vinegar Solution

Vinegar is good for getting out many kinds of stains. You can mix your own solution by using a tablespoon of white vinegar and a liter of water.

Put your solution in a spray bottle. Then spray the skid marks in your panties enough that they are entirely wet.

Let the solution sit on the underwear for at least a few minutes.

You’ll want to wash the panties after they sit. Again, you can machine wash them or hand wash them.

Alternatively, some panties are ok for soaking in the white vinegar solution. It depends on the material.

Remove What You Can

In some cases, the skid marks are sitting on top of the fabric rather than ground down into it.

Before you try doing anything else, try simply scraping the fecal matter out. It may easily pull away from the panties fabric.

It’s important to try and remove what you can.

If you soak panties that have feces that haven’t yet stained the material, you’ll ultimately cause a stain. So, make sure you try removing solid skid marks to see if there’s a reason to soak your underwear at all.

Lemon Juice Might Save the Day

Lemon juice has bleaching capability.

That means you could use it on white or light-colored underwear to remove skid marks. Squeeze lemon juice onto the stains and allow it to sit for up to a half-hour.

You can also use lemon juice in combination with other substances.

You could mix your own solution using ingredients like lemon juice, baking soda, detergent, or hydrogen peroxide.

The lemon juice also helps with the smell of skid marks. So, a solution with a mix of lemon juice, other ingredients, and diluted with water can remove the stains and the odor.

Vodka Helps with Odor Too

If you are successful with removing the stains but the smell is still an issue, vodka can help you with that.

Buy a bottle of cheap plain vodka. Pour it into a spray bottle. Spray vodka on the underwear that had the stains.

Allow it to sit there long enough to evaporate. Not only will it remove the odor, but it also helps preserve the stability of the fabric.

Do not dilute the vodka with any water. It will reduce the effectiveness of the alcohol for removing the smell.

How to Prevent Skid Marks in Underwear

Sometimes it’s better to be proactive rather than reactive.

There are some ways you can prevent skid marks altogether. Read on to learn all about how you can keep your panties free of unsightly stains.

Wipe More Thoroughly

The biggest cause of skid marks in panties is not wiping well enough.

It could be that you don’t wipe enough times. It may be you don’t wipe deep enough. In either case, it’s an easy fix.

When we have a bowel movement, the anus lining turns itself outward some.

Once the feces leaves the body the anus lining retreats back into place. It often takes some fecal matter with it.

When you don’t wipe deep enough to reach the lining, that fecal matter often ends up in your underwear.

Another issue is with using dry toilet paper to clean yourself.

You’ll have better success at preventing skid marks by using wet wipes. They clean your undercarriage more effectively.

Make Sure You Eat Enough Fiber

You’ll find that when your bowel movement is more solid you don’t find skid marks in your underwear.

That’s because you’re getting enough fiber to produce a better quality stool.

Your body needs fiber to support the good bacteria in your intestinal tract and colon. That good bacteria is what gives you the more stable solid stool.

You know the kind. You can wipe and there’s nothing on the paper. Some people refer to this as a “ghost poop.”

If you frequently have loose, soft, or sticky bowel movements, pay more attention to your fiber intake. You may need to adjust it to make sure you’re getting enough.

Keep Your Rear Well-Groomed

The area around your anus may have quite a bit of hair.

While some people think to groom it, others may not. It’s not a region of the body we see, so we don’t notice the hair.

When you go to the bathroom, fecal particles can get trapped by the hair around the anus. Even after you wipe, those particles may still be there. Then they end up staining your undergarments.

Get in the habit of shaving, waxing, or trimming the hair in and around your backside.

That way there’s nothing to trap fecal matter on its way out.

Choose a Different Style of Panties

As women, we have an array of underwear styles to choose from. For instance, there are boy-cut panties, hipsters, briefs, thongs, string, Brazilian, slip, bikini, and tanga.

Some panties are tighter and more invasive than others.

Let’s say you wear thongs all the time. Let’s also say you’re having an issue with skid marks on those thongs.

If you were to switch to boy-cut panties, it may help.

The boy-cut panties aren’t designed to sit between your cheeks. They’re less likely to come in contact with your anus.

Don’t Spend Too Much Time Sitting on the Toilet

When you take a book, magazine, or phone with you to the bathroom, it tends to cause you to sit on the toilet for longer than you need to.

Too much time on the toilet leads to drying.

You should wipe as soon as you’re done with your bowel movement.

That’s when the fecal matter on your skin is the easiest to remove. It’s still wet. Once it’s sat long enough to dry, wiping with dry toilet paper won’t remove all of it.

You’ll pull your panties back up and be on your way. Later in the day, you’ll sweat, which will allow the feces stuck to your skin to transfer to your panties.

When nature calls, it’s best to get in and get out rather than loiter on the toilet for too long.

Wash If You Have Hemorrhoids

If you have hemorrhoids, it’s often uncomfortable to wipe.

You need to take extra care in making sure you use wet wipes to get a cleaner wipe.

You can also wash after a bowel movement. You can use a bidet or special spray nozzle for this. You can also get in the shower.

Other Tips for Dealing with Skid Marks in Panties

The material your underwear is made of may add to your skid mark issue.

If you wear panties that don’t breathe well, it can cause you to sweat more. Sweating itself can result in stains on your underwear.

The sweat may also cause skid marks by wetting the feces stuck to your skin and allowing it to transfer to the fabric.

Here’s another tip.

Sometimes you just can’t help it. If you’re going out for the night and you’re worried about skid marks in your panties, take an extra pair with you tucked away in your handbag or purse.

Should you need to, you can simply change into clean underwear.

Some people have been successful at controlling their bathroom cycle.

The best time for a bowel movement is first thing in the morning. You can get it over with before you even take your daily shower.

One way to encourage a bowel movement is to drink a warm glass of lemon water without any food. Sometimes a cup of coffee does the trick, also.

When All Else Fails

If you’ve tried it all and you just can’t remove the skid marks or the smell of the stain, it may be best to throw those underwear away.

Unfortunately, they can’t all be saved. If the effort outweighs the end result, get rid of that pair.

Antimicrobial Underwear

If you’re left feeling icky after reading this article, that’s ok, we get it.

You could try some antimicrobial underwear. They’re engineered to keep bacteria from growing in the southern hemisphere of your body.

Cotton Underwear Breathes Best

Breathable cotton underwear that isn’t positioned between your cheeks and touching the anus are best for avoiding skid marks.

When you make the best choices for your body, you can prevent unsightly stains.
