I think of blogging as kind of like pushing a large boulder—hard to get moving but once it starts rolling, it’s pretty much smooth sailing.
That being said, millionaire bloggers didn’t earn their money on day 1. They all struggled at first and slowly built their dynasty brick by brick.
Lucky for you, WordPress and hosting sites have made it easier than ever to get started. With Bluehost, in particular, I find it’s so much easier (and cheaper) for both beginners and experienced bloggers.
With my guide on how to start a WordPress blog on Bluehost, you’ll be blogging in no time and know why this pairing is the best choice. Let’s kick it!
Why is Bluehost heavily recommended? What is so special about them?
In line with this lofty endorsement, Bluehost’s WordPress hosting plans are pretty affordable as well, starting at a discounted price of just $3.95 per month for their Basic plan. Other plans include Plus and Choice Plus which, of course, have additional features at higher rates.
Regardless of what plan you choose though, all of them have:
- Automatic WordPress installation
- Automatic WordPress updates
- Microsoft Office 365 available
- Secure Configuration of Login Credentials
- Free Domain Name for 1 Year
- WordPress Staging Environment
To be honest, you could also sign up for a free blog at sites like Blogger and Wix, BUT YOU SHOULDN’T.
That is if you want to make money.
Free blogging platforms don’t give you full control of your blogs, which gives them the ability to flood your site with unwanted ads. So, even if you put out the best and most unique content out there, the clutter can (and will) discourage your readers from revisiting and companies from pairing up with you.
Therefore, you could lose out on easy money-making opportunities from paid ads and affiliate marketing—just because you didn’t want to pay less than 4 dollars for WordPress hosting.
Having said that, here’s how you can start a WordPress blog with Bluehost.
How to Start a WordPress Blog with Bluehost
Step 1 – “Get Started”
Assuming you’re already on Bluehosts’s website, go ahead and click that “Get Started” button.
Step 2 – Choose a plan
Once you’re here, the next step is to choose what hosting plan you want to sign up for.
If you don’t know which one to choose right now, pick the “Basic” package. Since your blog is brand new, the basic features are likely all you’re going to need. Plus, if you ever feel like you want more, you can always just upgrade your plan in the future so it’s also the safest choice.
Step 3 – Choose a domain name
Assuming you don’t already own a domain, you can create one right here. Although this may seem like a simple task, I do suggest you take your time to think about it as it can play a huge role in the growth of your blog.
Think of it like your own home address. If you want people to visit you, make your house easy to find. Choose one that’s brief, unique, easy to spell, and easy to remember.
Remember: choosing domain names like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.com or uvuvwevwevweonyetenyevweugwemuhwemosas.org isn’t going to help your chances of growing your blog.
Step 4 – Fill up your account information
Step 5 – Pick your package info and extras
See the “Account Plan” drop down? That’s where you get to choose if you want the 12, 24, or 36 month plan.
Naturally, the 36 month plan is where you’ll get the best prices (i.e. the $3.95/month plan that you saw on Step 1). Of course, this is also what I suggest you take since it’s the cheapest option, especially if you’re thinking long-term.
Here’s what you get for the other options:
- 24 months – $4.95/month ($118.80 total)
- 12 months – $5.95/month ($71.40 total)
Regardless of what you pick though, I think all options are fairly priced.
As for the package extras, go ahead and uncheck those boxes unless you feel like you need them.
Step 6 – Finish Up
Type in your credit card information, read their terms and policies, check the box if you agree, and click submit.
Step 7 – Create your password
I probably don’t need to tell you this but make sure your password is something only you know. Don’t make it easy for hackers to sabotage your blog by choosing a password that’s easy, like your birthday, or your anniversary, or your mom’s name, just to name a few. If anything you could use a password manager like Dashlane like we do to make things easier.
Step 8 – Choose a theme
Once you’re done making your password, you’ll be taken to a page where’ll need to log in. When that’s done, you’ll be able to pick a theme.
Personally, I think this is a fun step because I like customizing my workplace. What’s more, there are plenty of cool free themes to choose from!
If you need more freedom with customization though, go with Elegant themes. They are a great choice for beginners.
They have a wide selection of over 80+ themes to select from. Their theme also comes with a social share and email plugin and 30-day money back guarantee.
Their most popular themes are the Divi Theme = aims at simplicity and beauty
and Extra Theme which we used to have = makes your site look like an authoritative site like the big brands.
Step 9 – Start building!
This is where you can finally open your doors to your very own WordPress blog.
After you click on that “Start Building” button, you’ll be asked whether your site is “Business” or “Personal”. You can choose either one so WordPress can help you set it up or you can choose the 3rd option, the “I don’t need help” button, so you can set it up all on your own.
And there you have it—your very own WordPress blog. Here’s a recap of the steps in case you needed it:
- Click on “Get Started”.
- Choose a plan. Basic should be absolutely fine if you’re new to this.
- Choose a domain name. Make it brief, simple, and easy to remember.
- Fill up your account information.
- Pick your package info and extras. The 36 month plan is the cheapest at $2.75/month. Uncheck the extras if you don’t need them.
- Pay your dues.
- Create your password.
- Choose a theme.
- Start building.
