Coffee has become a staple in most people’s daily morning routines.  It provides a quick picker-upper especially on days when you don’t feel like getting out of bed.

1. It lessens muscle pain after a rigorous workout

If you tend to overwork yourself during your workout sessions.  It might be worth it to load up on coffee before and after. An experiment was conducted to observe the effects of caffeine, specifically that in coffee when taken after intense workouts.  

It found that about 2 cups of coffee taken in after exercise resulted in a large reduction in muscle pain following the workouts.

This could be very helpful to those who are just about to start an exercise regimen.  First time gym goers can certainly relate to this when their whole bodies and muscles become sore because of the stress of first time body exertions.

2. It reduces the risk of depression and suicide among women

If you suddenly experience having the blues, a  dose or two of caffeine might be able to help lift your spirits up.

A study conducted by the Harvard School of Medicine over a period of 10 years has concluded that drinking coffee reduces the risk of depression and suicide in women.  Depression affects twice as many women as men and about 20% of women are affected by it in their lifetime.

3. It lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases

Atherosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries occur when blood vessels are narrowed due to the accumulation of fats.  In most people’s regular diets, fat is something that could be unavoidable. We are most often tempted to consume foods that are high in fat content no matter how hard we try to resist.

In a study conducted by a Dutch group in Rotterdam, it has been concluded that drinking coffee significantly reduced the risk of coronary calcification for moderate (3 to 4 cups) to high (more than 4 cups) intake compared with just 3 cups or less.  

4. It reduces the risk of colon cancer

Researchers at the University of Southern California have found that coffee decreases the risk of colon cancer.  Over 5,100 men and women diagnosed with colon cancer were examined along with 4,000 men and women with no history of the disease.  

The data gathered from their research showed that one or two servings of coffee per day resulted in a 26% reduction in the odds of developing colon cancer.  The risk continued to decrease up to 50% when participants of the research drank more than 2 servings per day.

Constipation is a popular health concern among most people.  Being able to move bowels regularly makes for a healthy body. From the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry comes a study made by the Department of Metabolism and Nutrition in Spain.

Results of the study proved that coffee is rich in dietary fiber that contains large amounts of antioxidant phenolics.  The study used several types of coffee such as the ones normally found in commercial coffee machines, filter or drip coffeemakers and even the freeze-dried or instant ones.  

6. It decreases the risk of Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream. Uric acid crystals form and accumulate in the joints causing extreme pain.   Although Gout in itself won’t kill you, it can cause serious health problems that will. People suffering from Gout attacks know only too well how much of an inconvenience and discomfort this may bring.

A study was conducted regarding coffee intake among almost 50,000 men over a 12-year period with assessments made every 4 years.  The men were asked to consume anywhere from 1 to 6 cups of coffee per day.

Out of the almost 50,000 men, only about 757 of them were confirmed to have had incidents of gout attacks. The incidence of a gout attack was significantly reduced as the men drank more cups of coffee each day.

7. It decreases the risk for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a disabling disease that affects the brain and the spinal cord.  It disrupts the flow of information in the brain. Results from 2 independent studies on whether high coffee intake could reduce the risk of multiple sclerosis proved to be positive.

The Swedish study was conducted among 1,620 cases and the US study was conducted among 1,159 cases with participants of varying coffee consumption habits. The study was published in the Journal of Neurology.

8. It lowers the risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Data from the Archives of Internal Medicine regarding research conducted on the effects of coffee consumption in women and the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes concluded that the consumption of 6 or more cups of coffee per day can lead to a 22% lower risk of diabetes.
