Top 10 Best Mattresses For Platform Beds

Best Mattresses for Platform Beds

When you’re looking to buy a new mattress, one thing we believe you should always consider is the foundation that comes with it.

That being said, platform beds are quickly becoming the most popular choice, if not already. Compared to box springs, platform beds are more affordable, come in more designs, and give you more room for storage. Some even come with built-in cabinets! In any case, they’re the more practical choice.

However, platform beds aren’t without its downsides — as with anything else in this world.

For one, they’re usually lower to the ground than box springs which can be a problem for people who have trouble getting in and out of bed. Plus, the actual fact that box springs have springs can be better for some mattresses.

So, we decided to make a list of what we think are the best mattresses for platform beds. We’re also going to show you how we chose these mattresses as well as how you can choose one for your own home. Lastly, we’ll show you a few tips on how you can take care of your mattress so it lasts as long as it should. Let’s get to it!

How we chose

All-foam mattresses are generally what experts recommend you pair with platform beds. Memory foam, in particular, goes well with slatted platforms because the space between the slats gives the mattress a bit more breathability — a problem notoriously associated with memory foam.

However, if you do decide to go with memory foam, do make sure that the space between your slates isn’t more than 3-4 inches. Any more than that and you run the risk of letting your foam sag between the slats. Actually, the same can be said for latex and polyfoam.

That being said, due to the surging popularity of platform beds over box springs, most modern mattresses — even hybrids and innersprings — are designed to fit platform beds. So, we kept this in mind and didn’t limit our choices to purely foam.

On this list, we made sure to only include mattresses that were at least 10 inches thick.

Our reason for this is that in platform beds, your mattress will typically be closer to the ground compared to if you used box springs. This can be a problem for people with problems on their knees, hips, back, and pretty much any joint involved with mobility.

With thicker mattresses, especially those with great edge support, the lower height of platform beds might not be much of an issue.

Based on our research, a lot of people who prefer box springs over platform beds say that it’s because box springs are more supportive. If you think about it, it does make sense considering how, even in mattresses, innerspring models often offer more support.

That being said, the alleged inferior support of platform beds can be a reason why your mattress sags prematurely. Thus, why we took into account the durability of the mattresses we included in our list.

Support and pressure relief

Speaking of support, we took this and pressure relief into account as well.

A supportive mattress is going to keep your spine in its neutral position while a pressure relieving mattress is, well… it’ll relieve pressure off of your sore spots (e.g. hips and shoulders). If a mattress has a good balance of both, then you can have yourself a good night’s sleep.

However, how supportive and pressure relieving your mattress feels largely depends on your preferred sleeping position and weight. We’ll talk more about this later but, yeah, we thought of this, too.

Price-to-value ratio

The concept is simple.

Is it worth it?

If we thought it wasn’t, then that mattress is off the list. But, if we thought it was, then it had a chance to be featured on our list.

Brand reputation

With every mattress we checked out, we always took the time to search for its maker on the Better Business Bureau (BBB). If the agency accredits the company and gave it a high rating, then there’s a great chance it offers great customer service.

On the other hand, if the company wasn’t recognized by the BBB, we scoured tons of verified customer reviews and relied on those to figure out the brand’s reputation.

In both cases, if we thought the brand treats their customers well, they were more likely to make the cut.

Trial periods and warranties

On the same note as brand reputation and customer experience, we also took note of trial periods and warranties.

When buying mattresses off the internet, most brands offer 100-night trial periods. This gives you ample time to decide whether or not you want the mattress. If in case you didn’t, you can always return it for a full refund. However, do not that most companies require you to try out the mattress for at least 30 days before returning it. This is so your body has enough time to adjust to the feel of a new mattress which, in turn, helps you make a more accurate decision.

Warranties, on the other hand, help you shoulder the cost in case something in your mattress breaks prematurely. Here, you won’t see anything less than a 10-year warranty.

 Other things we considered include:

  • Off-gassing – Foam mattresses are notorious for emitting some sort of chemical odor when you take them out of the box. The smell usually persists for a couple of days to maybe a couple of weeks. This is actually normal but, of course, the less time it takes for the smell to dissipate, the better.
  • Other features – These include certifications, organic materials, free pillows, free sheets, free white glove deliveries, etcetera. Anything that adds value to your purchase, we took note of those, too.

The best mattresses for platform beds

Are ones that complement the benefits of the foundation while also limiting, if not completely erasing its downsides.

That being said, all the mattresses you’ll see on this list are thick (to somewhat mask the low profile of most platform beds), durable (to help prevent sagging), and have the right combination of materials to comfortably ease you into a good night’s rest.

Here’s an overview of the mattresses that made our list. We’ve also put short reviews of each mattress further down to help give you a better idea of what they’re all about.

  • Affordable
  • Sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam (especially when paired with slatted platform beds)
  • Pressure relieving and supportive
  • Isolates motion well
  • Great for sleepers of all types and weight
  • Generous trial period and forever warranty
  • Free pillows
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Probably not for couples (weak edge support)
  • Beware of off-gassing

The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress is an affordable mattress made up of 3 layers of memory foam — a top layer of quilted gel memory foam as its cover, a 2nd layer of gel memory foam, and a 3rd layer of adaptive memory foam. At its base, Nectar uses a thick layer of polyfoam.

Because of these layers, the Nectar mattress does a great job of relieving pressure and isolating movement. The gel infused in the second layer also helps with cooling. Paired with a slatted platform bed, this should make it better than traditional memory foam at regulating sleeping temperatures.

Now, when it comes to support, that’s what the adaptive memory foam layer as well as the denser base layer of polyfoam are here for.

Moving one, this mattress seems like it would be a great mattress to sleep on regardless of your weight and sleeping position. We’re saying this based on the customer reviews we’ve read.

However, it might not be the best option for couples since it doesn’t have good edge support. This, in turn, limits the amount of usable space which couples, particularly those who share a smaller mattress, need. Also, off-gassing might be an issue.

Other features of the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress:

  • 365-night trial period (which starts 30 days from delivery)
  • Forever warranty
  • Free 2 pillows
  • Free shipping and returns

  • Great edge support, motion isolation, and temperature regulation
  • Optimal pressure relief and support
  • Free Pillows
  • CertiPUR-US® and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified

What’s so good about Helix is that they make mattresses for virtually everyone. They even make custom split mattresses for couples with different sleeping preferences. Just say what you want and Helix can make it for you. Oh, and in case you haven’t figured out exactly what you want yet, Helix also has a sleep quiz that we find very helpful.

That being said, here’s what the mattress looks like from the top-down:

  • Helix Dynamic Foam
  • Polyfoam or memory foam, depending on the mattress you pick
  • Individually wrapped coils with reinforced edges
  • DuraDense foam

The densities of each layer changes with every mattress. Helix simply adjusts these layers to fit whatever it is you want. There aren’t a lot of companies that go this far to satisfy the needs of their customers so we highly recommend you check them out.

As a whole, Helix mattresses sleep cool, isolate movement well, and come with great edge support, making them great for couples. They can also be as pressure relieving and supportive as you want them to be, so it’s really hard to go wrong with Helix.

Zinus Pressure Relief Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress (12 inches)

  • Multiple thickness (and firmness options)
  • Great for all sleeper types but particularly great for petite side sleepers
  • Pressure relieving
  • Isolates movement well
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Probably not as durable as the other mattresses on the list
  • Not for heavyweight sleepers
  • Off-gassing might be an issue

Zinus is known for being one of the most affordable mattress brands online. So affordable, in fact, that the Cal King version of this mattress still costs below 500 bucks.

That being said, the Zinus Green Tea Mattress comes in multiple thickness options: 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches. Here, their mattresses become softer the thicker they become, making the 12-inch option — which is what we recommend — their softest mattress.

In our opinion, the softness of the mattress makes it ideal for petite side sleepers. However, we do think it’s firm enough to comfortably sleep all types of sleepers, except maybe for those of you who carry a bit more weight.

For its construction, the Zinus Green Tea Mattress starts with a 3-inch layer of memory foam at the top, followed by a transition layer, then 2 layers of convoluted foam for its base.

This design tells us that the mattress values pressure relief above all else which further reinforces how it’s made for side sleepers. Also, largely because of the memory foam layer, the Zinus Green Tea mattress isolates movement pretty well. However, it has weak edge support which may be a problem for couples.

For its price, it’s also fairly durable. But, if we’re being completely honest, we don’t think it’ll last as long as the rest of the mattresses on this list. Plus, we’ve read a bunch off-gassing complaints from its customers so beware of that, too.

Other features of the Zinus Pressure Relief Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress (12 inches):

  • 10-year warranty
  • Free shipping and returns

  • Multiple firmness options, including custom internal split mattresses
  • Sleeps cool
  • Great for couples (solid edge support and motion isolation)
  • Supportive and pressure relieving
  • Lifetime warranty
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Not sold on Amazon. A few other Nest Bedding mattresses are sold there, though.

Like Helix, the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Hybrid is a mattress that we believe can comfortably sleep anyone regardless of weight and preferred sleeping position. They even make custom internal split mattresses for couples with different needs! Incredible, right?

Well, it all comes down to their multiple firmness options: Plush, medium, luxury firm, and of course, the custom internal split.

Again, similar to Helix mattresses, this mattress is a hybrid. Specifically, it uses gel memory foam, Titanchill endurance foam, Smartflow foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam.

Coils are great for airflow which helps this mattress regulate temperature. Plus, they’re pocketed so they’re great at isolating movement. Pretty solid edge support, too, so it’s great for couples even if you don’t get the custom split option. That is, of course, if you and your partner have the same preferences.

Last but definitely not the least, the mattress is also incredibly pressure relieving and supportive. It’s basically a complete mattress and we think it’s great for platform beds!

  • Lifetime warranty

Spindle Natural Latex Mattress

  • BBB accredited (A+ rating)
  • Customizable feel (firmness, pressure relief, and support) or multiple firmness options
  • Great motion isolation
  • Affordable for an organic latex mattress
  • Generous trial period
  • GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, Rainforest Alliance certified

  • Weak edge support
  • Layers arrive in 3 separate packages (tedious to assemble)
  • Heavy
  • Not for the obese and morbidly obese

First of all, Spindle is a BBB accredited company with an A+ rating. So, we’re confident that they treat their customers well. Now, let’s talk about the actual mattress.

The Spindle Natural Latex Mattress has 3 layers — and ALL of them are latex foams. Spindle also ships these layers in separate boxes, so you’re going to have to assemble the mattress yourself.

This set-up is quite unique but can also be tedious, especially since latex is a heavy type of foam. Nevertheless, what’s good about this is that the latex layers come in different firmness levels. This gives you the ability to adjust exactly how your mattress feels, depending on how you stack them up.

For starters though, Spindle makes you choose from either soft, medium, or firm. These options make it a great mattress for pretty much everyone. However, Spindle themselves said that their mattress isn’t for people with BMIs over 31 (obese and morbidly obese) so you might want to step on a weighing scale before you buy this mattress.

What’s surprising to us, however, is how good this mattress is at isolating movement and how bad it is regulating temperatures. Latex is typically associated with the exact opposite — responsive yet cool. The edge support isn’t great either so we wouldn’t recommend this to couples who share a small bed.

That being said, latex is an expensive type of foam, too. So, as expected, the Spindle Natural Latex Mattress isn’t the most affordable mattress on this list. However, compared to other latex mattresses, especially those that use all organic materials like this does, it’s actually sold at a more than reasonable price.

Other features of the Spindle Natural Latex Mattress:

  • 365-night trial period
  • 10-year warranty
  • Free shipping. For returns, well… they’ll give you a full refund for your mattress but they won’t take it back from your home. You’re going to have to send it back to them with a letter that says you’re donating your mattress to charity.

DreamFoam Bedding Willow

  • Affordable
  • Sleeps cool, especially when paired with a slatted platform bed
  • Multiple firmness options (can easily be changed by replacing the latex layer)
  • Great for couples
  • More responsive than traditional memory foam
  • Lengthy trial period
  • CertiPUR-US® and OEKO-TEX certified

  • Not for people who want the “hugging” feeling of memory foam

Here’s another affordable yet well constructed mattress for you. The DreamFoam Bedding Willow, previously known as the Ultimate Dreams Eurotop Latex Mattress, has a simple but effective design. Here’s what it looks like from the top-down:

  • Quilted Eurotop
  • Talalay latex
  • Dense convoluted foam

If you noticed, there’s no memory foam layer on this mattress. Instead, it uses latex — a more responsive, more breathable kind of foam. The shape of convoluted foam (egg-crate shaped) also promotes airflow, so this mattress sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses. However, this mattress won’t give you the same “hugging” feeling that you get from memory foam. So, if that’s what you’re after, this isn’t the mattress for you.

Anyhow, DreamFoam Bedding Willow also does a good job of isolating movement. Surprising, actually, since latex isn’t known to do this well. The edge support also seems pretty solid, so we think it’d make a great mattress for couples.

Oh, and we’re not done talking about this mattress’ latex. This layer is actually responsible for how firm the mattress feels. It can either be soft, medium, or firm. And, if in case you didn’t like how your mattress feels, the latex layer can be easily removed through a zipper on the Eurotop. Simply tell DreamFoam about your complaint and they’ll ship you another latex layer that better fits your needs.

Other features of the DreamFoam Bedding Willow:

  • 120-night trial period
  • 10-year warranty
  • Free shipping and returns
  • CertiPUR-US® and OEKO-TEX certified

DreamCloud’s Luxury Hybrid Mattress

DreamCloud’s Luxury Hybrid Mattress

  • Luxurious yet surprisingly affordable
  • Sleeps cool
  • Great for all sleepers regardless of preferred position and weight
  • Supportive and pressure relieving
  • Effective motion isolation
  • Sufficient edge support for lightweight to average eight sleepers
  • Generous warranty and trial period
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Edge support might be a little too weak for heavyweight sleepers or couples

While DreamCloud’s Luxury Hybrid Mattress isn’t the most affordable mattress on this list, its price is actually quite modest considering the year-long trial period, lifetime warranty, and the fact that it looks and feels luxurious. Brands that offer warranties and trial periods that are longer than the standard usually do this to hike up their prices but this brand doesn’t. Kudos to you, DreamCloud!

That being said, let’s talk design.

From the top-down, The DreamCloud mattress has the following layers:

  • Quilted Euro top
  • Gel-infused memory foam
  • Polyfoam support/transition layer
  • Pocketed coils
  • Dense polyfoam for the base

All in all, these layers make for a thick 15-inch mattress that we think is perfect for platform beds.

Per usual, the memory foam layer gives this mattress superb pressure relieving abilities while the support layer underneath it, well… it adds support. The Euro top adds more plush to the mattress which, in our opinion, is awesome! The gel infused within the memory foam as well as the inherent breathability of coils helps this mattress sleep cool.

It’s also great at isolating movement considering how that’s a forte of both memory foam and pocketed coils. For average and/or petite couples, the edge support on this should do just fine. But, without reinforcement, larger couples might find the perimeter of this mattress a wee bit too soft. Though, if you sleep alone, the luxury firm feel of the mattress should help you sleep comfortably regardless of weight or preferred sleeping position.

  • BBB accredited company (A+ rating)
  • Luxurious yet affordable
  • Multiple thickness and firmness options
  • Active wire Lumbar Zone technology for better support and pressure relief
  • Great edge support and motion isolation (great for couples)
  • Sleeps cool
  • Lengthy trial period and warranty
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Sold exclusively on the Saatva website
  • $99 return fee (for gas and labor)

Saatva is a BBB accredited brand with exceptional ratings both from the bureau (A+) and their customers. As such, we can confidently say that you can trust this company above most others.

Now, about their mattress. The Saatva Classic Mattress is advertised for luxury and we agree. It’s quite the luxurious mattress. However, in spite of that, it’s actually quite affordable.

The Saatva Classic Mattress also comes in multiple thickness options: 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. Both options cost and feel the same so it’s for aesthetic purposes. They’re also thick enough to be on low platform beds. So, really, the choice is yours.

Furthermore, this mattress has multiple firmness options: firm, plush soft, and luxury firm. Meaning, there’s a better chance of this mattress suiting your needs.

For its construction, the Saatva Classic Mattress has a Eurotop that gives it both its plush and luxurious appeal, 2 layers of coils that have their perimeters reinforced for edge support, and the brand’s very own take on zoned support technology.

The top layer of coils are pocketed to contour to the shape of your body (although not as well as memory foam) while also minimizing motion transfer. The bottom layer of coils, on the other hand, are more durable and act as the mattress’ base. Plus, since coils are naturally breathable and organic cotton covers the Eurotop, this mattress is great at keeping sleeping temperatures low.

Their zoned support technology — which they call their active wire Lumbar Zone technology — is basically a strategically placed rectangular wire and a strip of memory foam. Both make this mattress better capable of keeping your spine in its neutral position while also relieving pressure where you need it most.

Other features of the Saatva Classic Mattress:

  • 120-night trial period
  • 15-year warranty
  • Free white glove delivery. Returning the mattress will get you a full refund but you do have to pay $99 as a fee for labor and gas
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

The casper mattress

The Casper Mattress

  • BBB accredited (A+ rating)
  • Sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam
  • Pressure relieving and great at isolating movement
  • Zoned transition foam gives great support for your spine
  • Great for petite to average sized sleepers regardless of sleeping position
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Probably not for heavier sleepers
  • Weak edge support

Casper is one of the leading brands in the industry — and for good reason! They’re accredited by the BBB and given an A+ rating. Plus, they make amazing mattresses. But, the mattress that started it all for them, the original Casper Mattress, is what we think is best for platform beds.

It’s an affordable, 12-inch thick, all-foam mattress that’s made up of 4 different layers of foam. This is what it looks like from the top-down:

  • Open cell foam
  • Memory foam
  • Zoned transition foam
  • Support/base foam

If you noticed, they put their memory foam on the 2nd layer, not on top. What this does is it makes the mattress sleep cooler since you’re sleeping on top of a foam that promotes airflow. It also reduces the sinking feeling you get sleeping from sleeping on memory foam while still giving you the same pressure relieving, motion isolating experience. Edge support needs work though.

Anyhow, we think the design of their zone transition foam is simple but it works pretty darn well. Basically, the foam is softer around your head and shoulders and firmer around your trunk and hips. This way, your shoulders sink lower than your hips which ultimately promotes optimal spinal alignment.

Overall, we think the mattress would feel great if you’re average weight or petite, regardless of how you choose to sleep. If you’re a little heavier than the average, however, maybe pick a firmer bed than this.

Other features of The Casper Mattress:

  • 100-night trial period
  • 10-year limited warranty

  • Incredible zoned support design for optimal spinal alignment and pressure relief
  • Great for all types of sleepers except maybe for stomach sleepers
  • Great motion isolation
  • Sleeps cool
  • Generous trial period and warranty
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

  • Exclusively sold on the Level Sleep website
  • Probably not firm enough for stomach sleepers

The Level Sleep Mattress is advertised to be great for all frames which, of course, includes platform beds. However, even without the marketing, we still think this mattress is great.

So, let’s talk structure.

The Level Sleep Mattress is an all-foam mattress with 3 different layers. Here’s what it looks like from the top-down:

  • Enduroplush® high resiliency (HR) foam
  • Energex® foam
  • High density polyfoam

What makes this mattress stand out is its zoned support technology used in its 2nd layer, or the Energex® foam. Basically, it makes the area around your head and shoulders feel soft, the area around your trunk feel firm, and the area around your hips feel medium. What this does is it cradles your entire body, giving you support and pressure relief where you need it most.

It also does a great job at isolating movement and keeping temperatures low, especially since the slats on platform beds also promote airflow. However, it might not be the best if you’re a couple sharing a smaller mattress since the edge support isn’t anything to write home about.

Still, we think the Level Sleep Mattress would make a great mattress for pretty much anyone. Well, maybe not if you’re a stomach sleeper who needs a firmer mattress.

Other features of the Level Sleep Mattress:

  • 365-night trial period
  • Forever warranty
  • Free shipping and returns
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

Things to consider before buying mattresses for platform beds

Now that we’ve shown you what we think are the best mattresses for platform beds and how we chose them, it’s time to take the next step which is helping you choose the best mattress for YOU. Here are a few things we believe you should consider:

Your weight

How a mattress feels can be different from person to person. There’s a bunch of factors why this is but one of the main ones is your weight.

Are you larger than the average person?

If so, then you’re putting a lot of pressure on your mattress, making it feel softer to you than it would to your smaller peers. The solution is to find a firmer mattress. A mattress that’s at least on the firmer end of medium-firm should be great.

The best mattress for large sleepers with platform beds: Helix Mattresses

Do you weigh less than the average person?

Then it’s the exact opposite — you’re putting less pressure on your mattress, so you’re going to want to find one that’s softer than your heavier peers would find comfortable. As such, we recommend finding a mattress that’s on the softer side of medium-firm, if not softer.

The best mattress for petite sleepers with platform beds: The Casper Mattress

If you’re average weight, then we suggest considering your preferred sleeping position (or sleeper type) instead. Which brings us to…

What position do you sleep in?

There’s 3 main ones:

  • Side sleeping
  • Back sleeping, and
  • Stomach sleeping

If you want a 4th option, then it’s combo sleeping, or basically any combination of sleeping on your side, back, or stomach. In this case, maybe pick your favorite one.

Anyhow, here’s why you should think about this before buying a mattress:

If you’re a side sleeper…

Side sleepers are the most common types of sleepers. I’m a side sleeper myself! Any other position and I just can’t sleep.

However, the problem with us side sleepers is that we put a lot of our weight on our hips and shoulders. If the mattress is too firm, then these joints ache in the morning. If it’s too soft, then our backs sag into the mattress and messes up our spinal alignment.

What we need is a mattress that’s soft enough to allow our hips and shoulders to sink while still being firm enough to support our spine. As such, we recommend mattresses in the range of medium soft to medium firm.

The best mattress for side sleepers with platform beds: Nectar Memory Foam Mattress

If you’re a back sleeper…

Then you belong to the 2nd most common types of sleepers and what many experts believe to be the healthiest among the 3 types.

In this case, you’re going to want a mattress that maintains the neutral arch of your spine. For this to happen, it needs to be firm enough to prevent your hips from sinking excessively but also one that conforms to the shape of your body.

The best mattress for back sleepers with platform beds: The Saatva Classic Mattress

If you’re a stomach sleeper…

Per statistics, stomach sleepers are the rarest types of sleepers. According to experts, it’s also the most unhealthy. That’s a topic for another discussion but a lot of it how bad it positions your spine. So, before we get into anything else… have you considered switching to another position? Because if you haven’t, then maybe you should try that first.

Anyhow, if you did try and it just didn’t feel comfortable, the next best option is perhaps finding a mattress that’s pretty much all about support. Similar to back sleepers, firmer mattresses tend to do the trick.

The best mattress for stomach sleepers with platform beds: The Saatva Classic Mattress

Do you sleep alone or with a partner?

If you’re sleeping beside someone, regardless if it’s a person or a pet, you’re going to want to find a mattress that isolates movement well. It’s a simple concept, really — if they move around and you’re fast asleep, you wouldn’t want to be disturbed. A bed that effectively isolates movement confines that ruckus to their side of the bed.

Now, another thing you might want to consider is edge support. This is important particularly if you’re a couple who shares a smaller bed. Or, if you and your partner aren’t the type to cuddle when you sleep. With great edge support, you can use every inch of that bed. Plus, sleeping on the edge won’t make you feel like your mattress is rolling you to the floor or back to the middle.

Read the fine print

Okay, so this is really, REALLY important. Some mattress companies don’t actually want you to use platform beds as a foundation and if you do, your warranty can and will be void.

Furthermore, some companies who do allow you to use platform beds have certain specifications. For example, a company might require you to use platform beds with slats no greater than 3 inches apart. If you use more than that, you better say goodbye to your warranty and refund.

There are a bunch of other examples, of course, but it’s going to take forever to go through them all. The point we’re trying to make is if you don’t want to waste your money, READ THE FINE PRINT! Read those boring policies and, trust us, you’ll be thankful you did.

Tips on how to maintain your mattress

Use clean sheets

Think of your sheets as your first line of defense against bugs, mites, dead skin, hair, sweat, saliva, crumbs, spilled coffee, and all sorts of other things that can shorten the life of your mattress. And, after just a few days of using your bed, those sheets will inevitably be caked with those nasty things — even if it looks and feels clean!

Our advice? Change your sheets once a week.

Use a mattress protector

Another way you can beef up your mattress’ defenses is to use some sort of mattress protector. These can either be tops or covers. We recommend covers simply because it does a better of shielding your entire mattress but they can also be more expensive. So, pick whatever best fits your budget.

Also, some of these protectors can actually change how your mattress feels, so pick one that helps it feel better.

As a group, we use Slumber Cloud’s Dryline Mattress Protector. It’s honestly not the most affordable option but we think it helps us sleep cooler and, perhaps more importantly, it does a fantastic job of protecting our mattresses from small debris and fluids.

Use a vacuum

If you haven’t thought of vacuuming your mattress, then now’s the best time to do so.

You see, sheets and protectors can only do so much. Sometimes, those vile mattress killers still penetrate your defenses and make it to your mattress. That’s where your vacuum comes in.

We know it can be troublesome so we won’t tell you to do this everyday. Not even every week if you don’t want to. BUT! Do keep this in mind and whip out the sucker every once in a while.

Don’t use your bed as a trampoline

You and/or your kids might think it’s fun to jump around on your bed but it’s essentially like beating up your mattress. Sooner than later, it’s going to sag and get lumpy, and you won’t be able to use it anymore.

So, if you wanted to jump around, buy an actual trampoline. Or, I don’t know… maybe find some other type of activity to blow off some steam.

Rotate and/or flip your mattress

Wait! Before you do that, let’s circle back to reading the fine print.

Some manufacturers don’t want you to do this, too, so make sure they actually allow you to turn your mattress around before doing so. Or else, it’s bye-bye warranty.

That being said, if they do actually want you to flip and/or rotate your mattress, it can help evenly distribute wear. In the long run, this may help prolong the life of your mattress.

The pros and cons of platform beds

  • Affordable – You don’t have to buy anything else aside from a mattress
  • Breathable – Compared to box springs, the slats on platform beds promote airflow
  • Extra room for storage – Some platform beds come with drawers but even if they don’t, you’ll have sufficient space under your bed to store some of your stuff
  • More designs – Some people like the look of box springs but with platform beds, you’ll have significantly more designs to choose from
  • Easy to fix – Slats are easy to repair. Easy to find, too.

  • Hard to move (heavy) – The weight of the bed itself makes moving it a challenge. Thankfully, a lot of platform beds are easily assembled and disassembled.
  • Low height – This might be a problem if you have mobility issues (e.g. back, hip, or knee pain). However, a thicker mattress might prove helpful.

From where we stand, the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress is the best mattress for platform beds because the pair does a good job of highlighting each others upsides while also minimizing their cons.

For one, Nectar has 3 layers of memory foam which fits great with slatted platform beds because the foundation promotes airflow — something that memory foam mattresses typically have trouble with. Furthermore, the mattress is thick enough to make it feel as if the platform bed is higher off the ground. It’s also great just in terms of relieving pressure, supporting the arch of your spine, and making sure you still have some money left in the bank after your purchase.

Naturally, you don’t have to agree with us on everything. If you don’t think the Nectar Memory Foam mattress is the right fit for you, that’s a-okay. You have more choices here anyway. And, if you don’t find any of the mattresses here suitable, then we hope our list of things to consider before buying a mattress at least helps you out.
