Being in a healthy relationship is great, isn’t it? You have someone who you can constantly go home to regardless of how your day went and when you’re together, it’s like you’re in your safe haven, no matter where you are in the world.

Well, sorry to break it to you but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Things can get pretty rough, too, you know. There’ll be tons of arguments and disagreements along the way but the beauty of it all as in the end, there’s also compromise.

Now, if you’re already looking at mattresses for couples, I’m sure you already know that what I’m talking about. The search can be extra challenging because you not only have to consider your own preferences and needs, you have to take note of what your partner’s requirements as well.

That said, the people on our team have compiled what we think are the best mattresses for couples. Furthermore, we’ll help you narrow down your choices even more with a short guide on how to pick a mattress that works for you and your spouse. Let’s get to it!

How we chose

Price-to-value ratio

Basically, if we think a mattress is reasonably priced for whatever it has to offer, it has a good chance of climbing up the ladder.

Of course, we didn’t just settle for the cheapest mattresses we could find but we didn’t rule those out either.

Brand reputation

Yup, we considered this, too. If it were us buying the mattress, we’d want to buy from a brand that we can trust — one that has excellent customer service just in case we needed help, and one that’s honest about the products they’re trying to sell.

The Better Business Bureau is a good place to start if you’re ever wondering about a particular brand’s reputation but you could also check the reviews for the mattress you’re looking at and see what other people have to say.

Materials and combinations

These determine how the mattress will ultimately feel. Whether it sleeps hot or cold, if it’s firm or soft, if it’s responsive or sinking, organic or synthetic — every single feature of the mattress boils down to its construction, which is also what makes them unique.

If we think the end product is suitable for couples, we took note of it.

Durability and warranty

As a couple, you’re going to be putting a lot of pressure on your mattress, especially if one or both of you have on a few extra pounds. In some cases, this causes the mattress to break down prematurely.

So, we looked for mattresses that we thought we were sturdy enough to last for more than a few years. Plus, we took note of warranties, too. If in case the mattress breaks, you’re going to want a lengthy warranty that’ll help you shoulder the costs.

Trial periods

Since the mattresses on this list are bought off the internet, you won’t actually be able to test them out before paying for them. BUT! What makes them safe bets is their trial periods.

Basically, you get a certain amount of nights to try out the mattress. If you don’t like it, ship the mattress back to them and get a full refund. It’s pretty much risk-free.

Now, the standard for these trial periods seem to be 100 nights so we set that as our minimum. Needless to say, the longer the trial, the better.

Other things we took note of include:

  • Off-gassing – A lot of of new mattresses smell like nasty chemicals, otherwise known as off-gassing. Typically though, the odor only lasts for a couple of days to maybe a week so it’s not that big of a deal. However, if it persists, that’s a negative mark on our scoreboard.
  • Unique features – We also took note of certifications, freebies, and all sorts of other unique features that come with your purchase. While largely unnoticeable, we think these things add value.

The best mattresses for couples

The best mattresses for couples are, obviously, the ones that you both can enjoy. Unfortunately, that can be challenging particularly if you and your partner have different preferences.

So, on this list, we picked mattresses that were versatile enough to sleep multiple types of sleepers and weight. A couple of mattresses here even have split firmness options where one side feels different from the other.

That being said, here’s a look at the mattresses that made our list. Just a little further down are short reviews of each mattress to hopefully give you a better chance of picking the right one.

When you visit Helix’s website, you will promptly read their slogan “Mattresses For Every Body”.

True enough, they do — which is exactly why we chose to feature the brand (and not just their mattresses) as our top pick.

Regardless if you and your partner are heavy, light, average, side sleepers, back sleepers, or stomach sleepers, Helix has a mattress for both of you. Furthermore, if you and your partner have significantly different weights and sleep in different positions, Helix makes custom mattresses that’ll match BOTH of you as well — one side is designed for you, the other is designed for him/her. No Pretty sweet, huh?

Helix can do this because they design their beds as hybrids so there’s coils and multiple layers of foam. This gives them plenty of material to play with to get you what you want and need. Plus, coils are inherently breathable so all their mattresses should at least sleep neutral. The coils are also individually wrapped to limit motion transfer, making them great for couples. They’re generally inexpensive, too, although some do get a bit pricey.

Now, if you’re not actually sure what either of you want, Helix has a sleep quiz to help you find it and they’ll even tell you which of their mattresses suit you. And, if in any case you didn’t like your mattress, you can always have it replaced with one that you think is better, or get a full refund instead.

So, essentially, it’s pretty darn hard to go wrong with Helix. Whether you need a firm, medium, or soft mattress, or if you want one with different firmness on either side, they’ve got you covered.

Other features of Helix Mattresses:

Pros
  • Multiple firmness options, giving couples of different weights and sleeping positions several options
  • Sleeps cool
  • Great edge support and motion isolation
  • Supportive yet still pressure relieving
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Generous trial period
  • CertiPUR-US® and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified
Cons
  • Expensive

Advertised as a luxury hybrid bed, The WinkBed is an expensive mattress but we do think it’s great for couples.

First of all, it comes in 4 different firmness options: softer, luxury firm, firmer, and plus. So, whatever firmness you and your partner prefers, The WinkBed has it for you. Oh, and speaking of which, we’ll go over which options you should pick depending on your sleeping position and weight later on, so keep on scrolling!

Circling back to the topic… The WinkBed has two layers of coils. Both are individually wrapped for motion isolation while the base layer’s perimeter is reinforced for better edge support — features that help make it a great mattress for couples. Furthermore, the bottom coils also employ 7 support zones that are meant to support your back yet also help relieve pressure in certain spots.

Above these coils are layers of gel-infused memory foam and a quilted Euro top. These foam layers help keep relieve pressure and wick away heat. Combine that with all the airspace in between each coil and The WinkBed should help keep you and your partner sleep cool.

Other features of The WinkBed:

  • 120-night trial period. The first 30 nights are mandatory so you can’t return it prior to that.
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Free shipping and returns.
  • CertiPUR-US® and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified
Pros
  • Affordable
  • Sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses
  • Pressure relieving yet surprisingly supportive
  • Free 2 memory foam pillows
  • Generous warranty and trial period
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Okay edge support but could have been better
  • Off-gassing seems to be a common issue
  • Probably not for lightweight sleepers

First of all, the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress offers an entire year’s worth of trial and a warranty that literally lasts forever. I mean, that’s just incredible, especially for a mattress that’s surprisingly affordable. In fact, it’s the most affordable bed on this list.

That being said, memory foam mattresses tend to sleep hot, but not Nectar. This mattress has 3 layers of memory foam but the 2 top layers both have gel in them, which helps them regulate temperature.

The mattress also relieves pressure and, for a bed with 3 memory foam layers, surprisingly supportive. Of course, this might also be because of the bottom layer of high density foam. According to Nectar, this layer is a huge part of why they’re so confident in their trial period and warranty.

Now, when it comes to absorbing and isolating movement, memory foam does a good job of that. Edge support could have been better though but it should at least be enough to make couples feel comfortable.

However, the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress does have a medium-firm feel to it, so it’s probably not the best choice for lightweight couples. Also, beware of off-gassing as it seems to be this mattress’ common issue.

Other features of the Nectar Memory Foam Mattress:

  • 365-night trial period
  • Forever warranty
  • Free 2 memory foam pillows
  • Free shipping and returns
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Pros
  • Multiple firmness and thickness options
  • Great for all types of sleepers
  • Pressure relieving and supportive
  • Sleeps cool (thanks mostly to the coil-on-coil design)
  • Luxurious yet affordable
  • Incredible edge support and motion isolation
  • BBB accredited business (A+ rating)
  • Lengthy warranty and trial period
  • Free white glove delivery
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • You have to pay $99 for returns
  • Sold exclusively on their website

The Saatva Classic Mattress is luxurious, high-end mattress — one that you’d expect to see in hotel rooms. In spite of this, it’s actually quite affordable. We think the price-to-value ratio on this mattress is insanely good which is why it’s on our list.

That said, this mattress comes in multiple firmness options:

  • Luxury firm (they’re most popular option)
  • Plush soft
  • Firm

The luxury firm (medium firm) option is what we’d recommend to pretty much everyone as the safest choice. However, if you and your partner weigh less or are side sleepers who like a bit more cushion, the plush soft could also be an option. On the other hand, if you’re a couple of heavyweights or are back or stomach sleepers who want more support, the firm option might be best.

Apart from the firmness options, The Saatva Classic mattress can also either be 11.5 or 14.5 inches thick. In this case, the thickness doesn’t actually affect how the mattress feels so it’s more aesthetic than anything. Pick whatever fits your style.

Speaking of style, this mattress comes with a luxurious pillow top that, in our opinion, elevates the looks of the bed as well giving it a comfortable, pressure relieving feeling.

Below this is 2 layers of coils. The top layer is made of individually wrapped coils that limit motion transfer while the coils below it are there for support and durability. And, since coils are innately breathable, this mattress also sleeps cool. The perimeter is reinforced, too, so the edge support is great.

Oh, and Saatva is also a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating. They also seem very responsive to their customers problems based on the feedback we’ve read.

Other features of The Saatva Classic Mattress:

  • 120-night trial period
  • 15-year warranty
  • Free white glove delivery. You pay $99 for returns though. They say it’s for gas and labor.
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Pros
  • Multiple firmness options, including split firmness
  • Great for pretty much everybody
  • Sleeps fairly cool
  • Impressive edge support and motion isolation
  • Lifetime warranty
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Nest Bedding sells a couple of its products on Amazon but apparently, this isn’t one of them.

Nest Bedding’s Alexander Signature Hybrid comes in multiple firmness options:

  • Plush
  • Medium
  • Luxury Firm, or
  • An internal split combining any of the above 3 options

Like Helix, the biggest reason why this mattress made our list is because you can buy one that’s split into 2 different firmness options that fit largely different couples. We honestly think it’s a mattress that everyone can comfortably sleep in.

That said, let’s talk about what’s inside the mattress and how it feels.

From the top, the Alexander Signature Hybrid is made with gel memory foam (and quilted, phase change cover), Titanchill endurance foam, Smartflow support foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam for its base.

This combination makes it great for relieving pressure while still providing support. It also sleeps fairly cool, isolates movement effectively, and the edge support is impressive, too!

Other features of the Nest Bedding Alexander Signature Hybrid:

  • 100-night trial period
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Free shipping
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

Pros
  • BBB accredited company (A+ rating)
  • Supportive and pressure relieving
  • Superb edge support
  • Great motion isolation
  • Sleeps cooler and is more responsive than traditional memory foam
  • Great for average to larger couples who sleep on their backs or stomachs
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Might not be the best choice for petite side sleepers
  • Slightly more expensive than some other options

First of all, Leesa is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited company with an A+ rating. To us, this means it’s a great company that’s equalled, if not surpassed by its own customer service. True enough, Leesa does a great job responding to complaints and helping their customers resolve issues with their products.

That said, we think the Leesa Hybrid Mattress is a great mattress for couples. It can be a little pricey though.

It’s a hybrid so there’s coils and foams here. Coils are inherently supportive but these coils are also individually wrapped which means they’re great at isolating movement. Edge support is superb, too, so you will be able to use every inch of this mattress.

Moving on, above these coils are a transition layer (so you don’t feel the coils), standard memory foam (for pressure relief and conformity), and a layer of premium perforated foam to help promote airflow while simultaneously making the bed more responsive.

Overall, we think the Leesa Hybrid Mattress is a medium-firm mattress that’s great for average to maybe heavyweight couples who either sleep on their backs or stomachs. If you or your partner are a petite side sleeper, this bed might feel too firm.

Other features of the Leesa Hybrid Mattress:

  • 100-night trial period
  • 10-year warranty
  • Free shipping and returns
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Find the best price online
Pros
  • Pressure relieving and supportive
  • Great motion isolation and edge support
  • Sleeps cooler than memory foam
  • Multiple firmness and thickness options (i.e. optional pillow top)
  • Lengthy trial period and warranty
  • Eco-friendly
  • Greenguard Gold and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified
Cons
  • Comfort might be more of a gamble for lightweight sleepers
  • Expensive
  • Exclusively sold on their website

As its name might have already given you an idea, the Avocado Green Mattress is the most eco-friendly mattress on this list. It’s also one of the more expensive. However, it does come with a generous 1-year trial period and 25-year warranty, so we think the price is justified.

That being said, you can have this mattress in two options: standard or with pillow top.

The standard version is 11 inches thick with a gentle firm (firm) feel to it whereas the pillow top version is 13 inches thick with a luxury plush (medium firm) feel.

As you can see, the added pillow top essentially gives this mattress multiple thickness and firmness options.

  • The gentle firm (standard) option would probably be best for back/stomach sleepers and heavyweight sleepers.
  • The softer luxury plush (with pillow top) option, on the other hand, might be suitable for side sleepers and average weight sleepers.

If you’re a couple of lightweights, you could go for the luxury plush option, too, although we imagine the mattress might feel a little too solid for some.

Moving on, the mattress is made up of individually wrapped coils, latex, cotton, and wool — all contributing to a mattress that sleeps cooler than most memory foam beds. It’s also quite supportive and pressure relieving with great motion isolation and edge support.

Other features of the Avocado Green Mattress:

  • 1-year trial period
  • 25-year warranty
  • Free shipping
  • Greenguard Gold and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified
Pros
  • Two firmness options in one mattress
  • Affordable
  • Suitable for pretty much all types of sleepers
  • Sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam
  • Great at isolating movement
  • Lengthy trial period and lifetime warranty
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Edge support could have been better, particularly on the soft side

Our team thinks the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers but it’s a hell of a bed for couples, too, particularly because it’s essentially 2 mattresses in 1.

On one side, the mattress feels soft and covered white/grey, and on the other is a firmer feeling mattress covered in black/grey.

We think the soft side is great for side sleepers and petite couples because it offers superb pressure relief whereas the firmer, more supportive side is more for average and heavyweight weight sleepers and back/stomach sleepers. So, it pretty much fits every type of sleeper.

Now, when it comes to sleeping temperature, the Layla Memory Foam Mattress sleeps pretty cool because its memory foam layers are infused with copper and gel. Plus, it has a layer of convoluted (egg crate) support foam which adds even more air space.

The motion isolation is impressive on both sides as well. With edge support, however, it’s 2 different stories — the soft side has an okay (not great) edge support whereas the firm option, as expected, fairs a bit better.

Other features of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress:

  • 120-night trial period
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Free shipping and returns. You need to try it out for 2 weeks before you can return it though.
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Find the best price online
Pros
  • BBB accredited (A rating)
  • Sleeps noticeably cool
  • Unique material (hyper-elastic polymer)
  • Memory foam-like pressure relief yet still supportive
  • Isolates movement well
  • Free sleep mask and sheets
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Edge support could’ve been better
  • The Purple Grid probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea

Purple is relatively new in the business but seeing how they’re already BBB accredited with an A rating, we’re confident that this company takes making mattresses seriously.

They also have multiple mattresses on their lineup — all of them amazing. For couples, though, we recommend the original Purple mattress.

That being said, all of the company’s mattresses come with what they call the Purple Grid – a slab of hyper-elastic polymer shaped like a… well, grid. As far as we know, Purple is the only company that uses this type of material. Thus, making it unique from the rest of its competition.

Compared to traditional memory foam, we think this material is just as pressure relieving but it also sleeps significantly cooler because of all the air pockets.

Below the Purple Grid, the original Purple Mattress also has layers of soft, responsive foam and a firm, supportive foam.

Overall, the mattress has a medium-firm feel, sleeps cool, is great at relieving pressure and providing support, and isolates movement pretty well. We do think it needs better edge support though. We’d recommend this mostly to average, maybe heavyweight couples who like to snuggle up when they sleep.

Other features of The Purple Mattress:

  • 100-night trial
  • 10-year warranty
  • Free shipping and returns
  • Free sleep mask and sheets
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Find the best price online
Pros
  • Multiple firmness options, making it a great choice for all sleeper types
  • Great at isolating movement
  • Superb pressure relief and solid support
  • Free white glove delivery
  • CertiPUR-US® certified
Cons
  • Not sold on Amazon
  • Beware of off-gassing
  • Edge support and temperature regulation aren’t that bad but they could be better

First of all, the Loom & Leaf mattress is made by Saatva — one of the best and most trustworthy brands in the mattress industry. So, if you feel like this mattress suits you, you can rest assured that you’re buying from a wonderful company.

That said, this mattress is an all-foam mattress with a quilted, organic cotton top, layers of memory foam, a transition layer in the middle, and a high density foam as its base.

The memory foam is infused with gel, so it helps keep temperatures down. The organic cotton top helps with this, too, but we don’t actually think it sleeps that cool (although it does sleep cooler than traditional memory foam).

Speaking of, memory foam mattresses are great at relieving pressure and isolating movement — and the Loom & Leaf is no exception. It’s pretty supportive as well. However, like most all-foam mattresses, the Loom & Leaf could use some work with edge support and off-gassing.

When it comes to firmness, this mattress can either come as relaxed firm (medium firm) and firm. We think the relaxed firm option is great for average to maybe lightweight sleepers and side sleepers whereas the firm option can be solid choice for back, stomach, and heavyweight sleepers.

Other features of the Loom & Leaf ( by Saatva):

  • 120-night trial period
  • 15-year warranty
  • Free white glove delivery. Although,if you decide to return the mattress, you will have to shoulder the transportation costs of $99 but they will also give you a full refund.
  • CertiPUR-US® certified

Things to consider before buying a mattress for couples

Now that we’ve taken you through what we think are the best mattresses for couples, it’s time we tell you about a few things that might help you narrow down your choices even more.

Weight

When choosing any mattress, you’ve got to throw weight into the equation.

According to a study, a mattress that you feel is medium-firm is generally best for your sleep. The problem is you can’t actually test out a bed prior to paying for it if you’re buying it off the internet. So, if you’re a heavier person, a mattress labeled as medium-firm might actually be too soft for you so there wouldn’t be enough support to keep your spine neutral. On the other hand, if you’re petite, a medium-firm mattress might feel like concrete and there’ll be little to no pressure relief.

Here’s what we recommend:

If you’re a couple who weigh about average, you have a wider set of choices. In our opinion, picking any medium-firm mattress on this list should be a safe bet — or you could also base your choice on your sleeping positions (we’ll get to this in a bit).

Now, you might be asking:

“What if me and my partner belong to different weight classes?”

Well, you have two choices here:

  • Get a customized (internally split) mattress, or
  • Get two smaller mattresses with equal dimensions and put them together

We recommend the first option simply because it’s easier to order one mattress instead of two. In this case, Helix Sleep is a good place to start.

But, if you have your eyes on getting two separate mattresses, perhaps the easiest way to do this is buying the same brand of mattress in two different firmness options. It’s easier to get the dimensions right this way. Also, you might want to order two twin XL mattresses. Combined, their dimensions are the same as that of a king-sized bed, so it’s going to be easier to find fitted sheets.

Sleeper types

Besides weight, you should also consider your sleeping positions. Here’s an overview:

For side sleepers:

Look for a mattress that relieves pressure on your hips and shoulders as these tend to be high-pressure areas when you sleep on your side. However, this mattress must also be firm enough to support the arch of your back.

The best mattress for side sleeping couples: Layla Memory Foam Mattress

For back sleepers:

Find a mattress conforms to the shape of your body but is also supportive. A mattress that’s supportive enough and adjusts to the shape of your body won’t let your hips sag around the middle. Thus, maintaining your spine in its neutral position and your body comfortable.

The best mattress for back sleeping couples: The Saatva Classic Mattress

For stomach sleepers:

Support, support, support — we think that’s what you should focus your attention on. If you slept on a mattress that’s not supportive enough, you could end up feeling you’re drowning because your face will literally be on the mattress as you sink. Firmer mattresses tend to do the trick.

The best mattress for stomach sleeping couples: The WinkBed (firmer or plus option)

Do you cuddle or sleep apart?

Falling asleep on the arms of your lover is definitely romantic but not everyone enjoys sharing their space.

If you’re a couple of cuddlers, edge support might not be as important because you’re probably going to spend most of your time spooning in the middle of the bed anyway.

However, if you need your space, edge support is vital, especially if you share a smaller mattress. With great edge support, you can use every single inch of your bed and not feel like the perimeter is pushing you off of the mattress and onto the floor.

Although, in both cases, we think a couple’s mattress should always have the ability to limit motion transfer. This way, there’s little chance of either of you waking up when the other party moves.

Maintaining your mattress

Think of it like protecting your investments — which is what a mattress essentially is because, you know… they’re expensive. So, it’s only reasonable to make them last as long as possible.

Thankfully, it isn’t hard to do that. Here are a few tips:

Change your sheets about once a week

Making your mattress last longer can literally be this simple. Even if your sheets look clean, you have to replace them regularly.

After nights of sleeping on your bed, your sheets will have a pile of dirt, crumbs, sweat, fluids, dead skin, bugs, mites, and other nasty things that may have fallen on top of your sheets. Some of them may even be too small to see.

Dressing your mattress up with new, clean sheets every week helps ensure that as little of these things defile your bed and shorten its life.

Use a mattress protector

These can either be tops or covers. Mattress covers protect your entire bed so this is what we recommend. Tops are great too, though.

Regardless, these things add one more layer of much needed protection. In case any of the nasty things on your sheets manage to seep through, your protector will be there to catch them and prevent them from ever landing on your mattress.

Here, we recommend Slumber Cloud’s Dryline Mattress Protector. Honestly, it can be a little pricey but it’s water resistant and also helps you sleep cooler.

Vacuum your mattress

So, you change your sheets regularly and you also have a mattress protector but what if some of the debris still managed to reach your mattress?

That’s where your vacuum comes in.

Vacuuming your mattress helps make sure that as little dirt stays on your bed.

Use the right foundation

Before I say anything else, YES, use a foundation. The right ones enhance the structure of your mattress and therefore helps evenly distribute weight. Furthermore, they elevate your mattress off the floor which, consequently, also keeps it off of the dirt that’s on the ground.

That said, figuring out what type of foundation to use is simple as most mattress manufacturers tell you all about it. Even better is that some of these same manufacturers sell the foundations, too. So, if you’ve already chosen which mattress you want to buy, check out that mattress’ web page as you’ll likely find information on the right foundation there as well.

Flip and/or rotate your mattress

Flipping and/or rotating your mattress helps ensure you put even wear on your bed. This way, there’s less chance that one part of your mattress degrades faster than the rest. Thus, making it usable for a longer time.

However, the catch is that some mattresses shouldn’t actually be flipped or rotated. So, make sure to check what the manufacturer says about this first.

No jumping on the bed

If you’re a couple, then maybe you’ve got kids too — and don’t they just love jumping on beds? Even if you don’t, maybe you’ve got younger cousins, siblings, or relatives that visit and they jump on your bed. Heck, maybe you or your partner jump on your bed.

Whatever the case may be, this puts a lot of pressure on your mattress and eventually cut its life short.

Conclusion

All in all, we think the best mattress for couples is one that satisfies the wants and needs of both parties with as little compromise as possible. Helix sleep, with all of the mattresses in their collection, does an excellent job of doing just that. Whether you sleep in different positions, weight different, and simply prefer different firmness options, the company does a good job of custom designing mattresses that cater to both your needs.

Of course, you don’t always have to agree with us. In this case, there are 9 more mattresses you can choose from on this list.

Also, did we help you find what you were looking for? Because if we did, all we ask is that you tell your friends about it so we can help them, too.
